Name of the organization for which you volunteered
- Hand in Hand, United Way Day of Reading at Madison Elementary, and Argrow’s House
What does this organization do?
- Hand in Hand empowers children and adults of all abilities to learn and grow by providing inclusive programs and supporting families.
- United Way Quad Cities Reading Day is a community-wide event that inspires hundreds of students with a love for reading, supporting early literacy and laying the foundation for lifelong success. With the help of businesses and volunteers, this initiative extends beyond classrooms to create a lasting impact on childhood literacy.
- Argrow’s House is a nurturing community and social enterprise that supports female survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. They walk alongside women and children on their healing journey, helping them achieve social and economic stability.
What inspired you to choose this organization?
- I enjoy volunteering with different organizations in the Quad Cities to learn more about the great work happening in our community. My first year with Hand in Hand, John A. was a chili contest judge—which made the event even more memorable. For United Way’s Reading Day, I was inspired by my love of reading to children, using character voices, and engaging in the fun conversations sparked by the books. Argrow’s House was introduced to me by my coworker, David Bohlman, who has both presented and volunteered there, and I was eager to support such a meaningful cause.
What kind of volunteer work did you do with this organization?
- At Hand in Hand’s Annual Chili Cookoff, I helped by handing out bowls and spoons to contestants and volunteering in the children’s game area to make sure kids had a great time. (You’ll have to attend someday—it’s always fun to find out your Chili Name!)
- With United Way Reading Day, I read to third-grade students, and each child received a copy of the book we read to take home and enjoy.
- At Argrow’s House, I helped prepare products for their Mother’s Day event, wrapping soaps and labeling body butters for sale in local shops.
Anything else you would like to add:
- I’ve volunteered with Hand in Hand every year since 2023, and it’s always such a fun and well-attended event. My favorite part is getting to know the kids who benefit from the donations—some of them even remember me from past years, which makes it extra special. Volunteering gives me the best feeling, knowing I’m helping the kids, strengthening our community, and supporting such impactful organizations.
